What are the options for replacing missing teeth?
Besides having dental implants, there are two main ways to replace missing teeth. The first is with a removable false tooth or teeth – a partial denture. The second is with a fixed bridge.
What is a dental bridge?
Dental bridges are designed to replace missing teeth, whether it’s a single tooth or a series of them. As their name suggests, these appliances effectively “bridge the gap” in your smile. Our dentists can craft bespoke bridges that seamlessly match the shade of your natural teeth, ensuring a harmonious and confident smile.
When is a dental bridge used?
A dental bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. Bridges are usually made of a precious metal base.
If the bridge will show, porcelain is then bonded to the base. Sometimes, there are other non-precious metals used in the base to reduce the cost.
Why should you replace missing teeth?
You should replace missing teeth for a number of reasons. Your appearance is one reason. Another is that the gap left by a missing tooth can mean greater strain is put on the teeth on either side.
A gap can also mean your ‘bite’ is affected because the teeth next to space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.
Is getting a dental bridge painful?
It’s common for patients to worry about the potential pain of receiving a dental bridge. Rest assured, the procedure is generally painless. Your dentist will use local anaesthesia to numb the area, ensuring you stay comfortable throughout the process.
Am I suitable for a dental bridge at your clinic in St Albans?
A key factor in determining your suitability for dental bridges is your overall oral health. It is essential that your gums and remaining teeth are in good condition. If you are experiencing gum disease or significant tooth decay, these issues need to be resolved before you can proceed with getting a dental bridge.
